BIG year for albums
Courtney Murphy Monday, 11 January 2010 12:15

My brother Kieran mentioned something to me yesterday that I though was rather prophetic.

He said that 2010 was going to be rather big year for albums.  My album BIG will finally get its release, Chris' new album of duets will also be released... and preproduction on a brand new Murphy brothers album will begin.  I had a songwriting session with Chris the other day, and we wrote a track called 'Take Your Time'.  I think it's got great pop leanings.

We've got a couple of older tracks that we think would be great for the album as well as a couple of separate tracks we won't mind bringing together.  I'm pretty excited about that.  I've even got a ripper idea for the album cover idea.

speaking of which, the album cover for 'Big' looks mint.  It's being finished currently by Debaser, an Eastern states based design company that got my attention for their work on the 'Empire of the Sun' record.  GREAT album cover that is.  So look out for a pretty great album cover kids.

A little less locally, Cake will be releasing a new album this year, after a 5 year break... which I'm probably MOST excited about... but there's a whole swag of new albums this year that are very exciting news indeed.

Outkast.

Midlake.

Fleet Foxes.

Scissor Sisters.

Dr. Dog.

She & Him Vol.2 (Zooey Deschanel's second outing).

MGMT (May even be a collaboration with McCartney on this!!!).

Maroon 5.

Panic! At The Disco (If you didn't get their last album 'Pretty Odd', what the hell is wrong with you!?)

Delta Goodrem (she has a special spot in my heart).

Aerosmith (HOW COOL IS THIS!!!).

Cee-Lo (The amazing voice of Gnarls Barkley looks to release a solo effort).

Elbow.

OK Go.

Hanson (yes... they're great now).

Stone Temple Pilots.

This is just a sampling of the myriad albums being released in 2010... my list are the ones that I'M excited about.  You should get out there and find some new music this year; don't let the radio tell you what to like.  Find it yourself... it'll mean so much more to you.  I can't wait to be blown away by a few new artists this year.  What an AMAZING year for music... I guess after the lacklustre 2009, 2010 was bound to be huge.

Peace, Love and Karma.

Court's Picks of 2009
Courtney Murphy Thursday, 31 December 2009 14:42

The end of the year is here… and you accumulate a selection of songs throughout the year that
resemble somewhat your
favourites for said year.  … Well that didn’t come out very well… did it?

So anyway, I’ve done up a little list of my favourite songs for 2009.  I didn’t get far…
only 18 tracks.  I’m going to list them, one by one… and the reason for their inclusion.

I must clarify beforehand that 2009 hasn’t been an ‘awesome’ year for music.
Most of my
favourite albums for the year were released LAST year.
I guess that’s why there are only 18 tracks.

Oh and they’re in no order.

1.     Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear

This Brooklyn based outfit have created something pretty wonderful in this
song.  Amazing drums, simple yet kind of haunting piano work, it reeks
of undercurrent pop America.  My favourite type of genre.  Whether they
intended their anti-folk style of songwriting to come out so clean smelling
is another story, but for this harmony sucker… ‘Two Weeks’ is mintox.
Oh… and Jesus Christ… check out the video.  Holy crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjecYugTbIQ

2.     I and Love and You – The Avett Brothers

From a Brooklyn based band to a song about Brooklyn, this next track is by
Scott and Seth Avett.  It’s another genre bending pop song about the
inspiring state of New York.  The Chorus bellows, ‘Oh Brooklyn Brooklyn
take me in, are you aware the shape I’m in? My hands they shake my head
it spins, oh Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in’.  The whole song is very much
downplayed, but absolutely worth the listen… wow.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj8HDe5M-Jo

3.     Brother Oh Brother – Bob Evans

I only heard this song recently and just loved it.  Kevin has taken a bit more
of a rock approach to his 2009 album ‘Goodnight Bull Creek’.  Genius
name that, too.  He said it was inspired partly by the ‘Sorry’ speech given
to the Aussie Stolen Generations, but pretty much took on a broader meaning.
Incidentally, I’m so glad I got to include some WA music on this list; makes
me proud.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_OiKrpB4eo

4.     Come and Go – Bleu

For those who don’t know, Bleu is a mate who took time out of his busy
schedule in the States to come and mix my album earlier this year.  He’s a
phenomenal talent who is to this day an unknown in Australia and undervalued
in the States.  This is the biggest crime of the Naughties.  As soon as he got
back to the states from mixing here, he released ‘A Watched Pot’ and his
first single ‘Come and Go’ which is just breathtaking.  After watching the
clip, you’ll be ordering your copy for sure… actually… I’m going to say it,
THIS is my favourite song of 2009.  There.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onqMRScrt2E

5.     Relator – Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson

Here’s a track that took me by surprise.  Surprise mainly because I didn’t
think that Scarlett Johansson could sing… and sing damn well.  Mr. Yorn
has put together a whole collaborative album with Miss. Johansson and
hasn’t exactly blown the world away.  The album is patchy at best, but this
song is killer; and seriously how bad can a song be that rips lyrics from
‘All My Loving’. The link I've included is a live version, that I think is more
fun than the actual filmclip.  Enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCx5sOj7SlA

6.     Broken Leg – Bluejuice

This is the only track on the list that would haggle for a number one spot
next to Bleu.  I was in Esperance earlier this year when I heard this for
the first time late in the night on Rage.  I thought it was American because
the production was so damn amazing; until I heard the pronounce ‘Broken’
like proud Aussies.  I hope this album wasn’t a fluke studio tricks, as I
saw them live on Tele, and it was very loose… but I think that’s probably
the appeal of them too.  They’re just having too much bloody fun with it all.
A guitarless band with an amazing keyboard player and a fresh take on
dual lead vocal duties with crazy fourth harmonies to boot.  This..song..rocks..
P.S. I've just noticed it's being played EVERYWHERE now.  I love it when
the radio stations pick up good music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJAWLfdkapQ

7.     Head Of The Hawk – Bluejuice

The title track from their 2009 album, not a whole lot more can be said.
They’ve started the album off with a bang.  Get the album.  Get it last week.
As this isn't a single the link is just for an 'audio only' YouTube clip.
It's still worth the listen.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzAFjoa59eA

8.     Boy Meets Girl – Bleu

My second favourite track on his album ‘A Watched Pot’.
Once again, GET. IT. NOW. The clip is a live rendition, from one of his
gigs in the states.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXbHmSrcGWI

9.     When The Lights Go Out – Bleu

Sorry to bug you, but have you heard about this chap named Bleu?
I might have mentioned him once or twice.  This song… completes me.
The link this time will take you to Not Records in the states, the best site
for rare powerpop records.  Buy the album, get the bonus (which is
mintox) and then you can brag to your friends how you're so novel
and arty because you've discovered new music.... ok well all that
aside, just buy the fucking album already... it's incredible.

http://www.notlame.com/BLEU/Page_1/CDBLEU4.html

10.     Garbage Day – Brendan Benson

I got put onto this song by my brother Kieran; like most great music
I get into.  We both fell in love with his ‘One Mississippi’ release way
back in 1996.  But since, I haven’t really followed him as closely.
I know he did some great work with Jack White in The Raconteurs
or The Saboteurs (depends on where you’re from apparently…) but
I lost interest somewhat.  His new album though… PRETTY damn good.
This one's a live in the studio clip.  Very polished version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_VFvZPIFsg

11.    My Girls – Animal Collective

How’s this for having my blinkers off?  Most of the time I like my pop
toasty with some a decent spreading of harmonies drizzling all over it…
but this little unusual Electro-dance-pop thing had me intrigued the
whole way through.  The production is headphone worthy.  Give it a
try, it won’t bite.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE

12.   Empire State Of Mind – Jay-z Featuring Alicia Keys

Once again, blinkers firmly put away for a sec.  I saw this first on the
MTV awards I think.  When rap is done right… it’s great.  Jive away
in the verses and then be blown away in the chorus by Alicia.  It might
also be that currently, I’m in love with anything that relates to New
York.  This screams it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjsXo9l6I8

13.   I’ve Got Friends – Manchester Orchestra

Another American act…  OOH alliteration! WOO!  These dudes are
from Georgia this time.  Very fantastic rock with a hooky harmony in
the chorus.  This song tests me for ‘hardness’, but it’s kinda hard to
overlook that killer chorus.  Check it out… please.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuixT3IGClY

14.  Never Enough – Kiss

KISS!!!  This is the first studio album for Kiss in 11 years… and also
their 19th.  With what sounds like a very charged up and still energetic
Paul Stanley at the helm we were always going to be in for a
ride back to the big haired 80’s; but SO WHAT!?  This song is pure
80’s rock, without a shadow of embarrassment.  Listen to it… and
NOT smile… dare you. Just an audio only clip this time too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71JLhdqOOKM

15.   All I Was Looking For Was You – Fastball

Do you remember ‘The Way’ by Fastball back in 1998?
Yeah, I know… who remembers stuff that long ago… well quickly go
away and YouTube that track to reacquaint yourself with this amazing
Austin Texas outfit.  Their 2009 album ‘Little White Lies’ is nothing
short of brilliant and this, the opening track, is indicative of its brilliance.
I think we all should Re-love Fastball.
Here's a live rendition of the song, as I couldn't find the official filmclip.
It's a bit loose, I guarantee the recording is so sweet and polished.

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDzxESriKQQ

16.    Like It Like That – Guy Sebastian

With the absolutely ridiculous radio saturation this song received this
year, as well as being on EVERY five minutes this Telethon, it’s hard
to revisit this song without cringing at the moment.  We need to breathe
before we can comment right?  Well all that aside, this song will and
should be a modern Australian classic.  It’s from the brain of one of
our MEGA megastars in music… and damn nice guy to boot.  Give
it a couple of months without thinking about it, and you’ll love this
again, and never want it to leave your side.  Next winter 2010, you’ll
be sipping your coffee on your way to work on a rainy Monday
morning, and you’ll need … something.  This song will be that elixir.
Mark my words.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS5mzKTvdJk

17.     Don’t Let Me Down – Eskimo Joe

Ooh right on, another WA song.  I remember having a chat with Joel
from the Eskys about who I should get to mix my album, and he asked
who I used for horns on my album.  The next thing I saw was, their
album was out (so much sooner than mine) and my dudes were playing
horns on THEIR album.  I felt a little bit proud that I’d pushed ‘em in
the right direction.  This is the second single off ‘Inshalla’ and a pretty
killer cut... and check this filmclip out, it's hilarious. Well done lads.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFwlbbYxQOY

18.    Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons

A little late in the year to make my favourite list, but this little gem makes
up the only British song on my faves list.  Sad?  Yeah, well says something
doesn’t it?  This little raucous folk number popped out of nowhere to be a
bit fun.  It’s sweaty and silly and too easy to listen to.  Like bacon frying in a pan.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLJf9qJHR3E

There you have it kids.  My favourite picks of 2009.  Buy ‘em, whack ‘em on a disc
in your car, and go nuts.

So is this blog long enough to make up for my absolute lack of activity on the
site of late?  I hope so.

Oh… and Happy New Year.

Slim Jim
Courtney Murphy

This little blog will unfortunately suffer from my memory somewhat.

In 1996, a fresh faced band of particularly young men waltzed (we might not have waltzed actually) into an ‘Agency’ in Perth; our mission? We were looking for work.

Enter Jamie Mercanti aka: Slim Jim. He took a look at us ‘kids’ (I was 16) and for some prophetic reason, took a MASSIVE punt by getting us a gig. I say ‘massive punt’ because the pub scene is quite an adult scene, even to this day. So to let a band with more than half the band under-age have a gig at all… was a bit of a risk.

To this day I don’t know what he saw in us, but before long we were coming back trumps. We were doing the ‘righty’. Whatever gig Murphy’s Lore got sent out to perform came back with a positive response… I guess it would have to as 13 years later…

…he’s still my agent.

In the early days, Jamie certainly tested us. We played some pretty unusual places sometimes… Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Backyard parties, Paddle-Steamers, Grain-Silos, TV Studios, Wineries, Truck-beds, Festivals, Sports clubs, Town Halls, Restaurants, Pubs… actually to be honest, there’s nothing unusual about those places at all… that’s just a normal rock band really… …except for the grain silo perhaps. Basically the point I’m making is, whenever Jamie threw something at us, whatever is was (and IS) we jumped at it and came bounding back asking for more. You knew that whatever you were going into was something that he had probably experienced before us, and knew what we were in for. Maybe that was the point also… he was modeling us into a hard-working outfit. Wow, that only just occurred to me.

There’s something very built in with Jamie that I would have to put down as ‘fatherly’. He was never really JUST an agent. Very quickly we garnered a much more personal relationship with him… and when it came to him finally getting married to the love of his life Felicity he trusted the music for his wedding to us.

That meant a lot to me. From that day forth, we were family.

Of course Idol happened and things went very ‘skewiff’ for a while, and we were out of touch… but he’s never shifted stance; he believed in me and if was able to help… he would.

This weekend, he did.

For those watching Telethon this weekend and watched it through Saturday night would have seen ‘Slim Jim’ commanding the panel better than the rest while smiling bravely through some late night entertainment.

He’s been involved heavily with Telethon for many years now, to the point where if they need something done, they go to him. So when they said they needed a great voice to lead some celebrities in the opening of Telethon 09, he thought of me.

He could have put anyone in that spot. He chose me.

I didn’t want to sit here and gush about my agent, and I’m not even concerned if he reads this or not… he knows how I feel anyway… it’s not the point. I just had an amazing weekend and I thought you should know why and who was responsible.

If you’re trying to get a start in the industry and you’ve found yourself an agent…

…make them proud…

…you’ll never look back.

New Web Site
Courtney Murphy Friday, 02 October 2009 09:32

Wow. This, ladies and gentlemen is my new look website. So much prettier than my blog site. And it’s got so much more to it, photos and videos… links to Twitter and Facebook and a free live track download for members only and best of all, a regularly updated Gig guide.
(I know it’s called ‘Tour Dates’ but until I ‘actually’ go on tour, I’m going to unofficially call it a gig guide)

I can’t wait to hear your comments on what you think of the new site. Please feel free to comment your heart out…

I want to thank Kim Berry and my brother Kieran Murphy. This whole site design was their vision, and completely their work under the guise of their new marketing and media business ‘Sixes & Sevens’ www.sixesandsevens.com.au and I’m supersoakingly-superstoked with it.

If you get the chance, please register on this site and you’ll receive some pretty mint-ox stuff in short future while we’re getting ready for the launch of my new album ‘Big’. Right now there’s a live recording of ‘Rocks in Your Head’ straight from Kane’s mixing desk. It’s exclusively for members and has never been released before. We’re yet to nut out the finer details but there will be competitions and free downloads to members only as well as the occasional gig guide email to let you know where I’m going to be. So SIGN UP… you won’t regret it.

Big loves,
Court.

I wish I was Farnham.
Courtney Murphy Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:39

Yeah... I do. Though, even HIS rise to fame wasn't a given... and that man is gifted more than anyone else I've ever seen. His voice should be gilded and put on display at the National Museum. Every time I've seen him on DVD or back in the day on Hey Hey or something, he's been better than anyone else I've ever heard... right? I mean who agrees with me here? The thing that drives me crazy though is The Little River Band saga. I understand that Beeb Birtles and Graeham (that's not a misprint... the dude changed the spelling for Feng Shui reasons... I shit you not...) Goble were kinda spoilt with Glenn Shorrock as their 'lead' singer, but with him gone and Farnham stepping in on lead singing duties... surely you'd step back a little and say... 'woah, hold on a second... I think this chappy is a little bit special'? From what I can gather, Farnham's tenure with LRB produced 3 albums... all of mediocre success. Mediocre in the scheme of things of course... if I had the success of any one of those albums... I'd be a happy boy. Also, Beeb wasn't thrilled with the harder 'edge' the band's sound was taking and also he wasn't a fan of... get this... Farnsy's stage performance... What? Whatever... I remember watching those TV specials as a kid thinking there was no one cooler onstage than Farnham. The way he'd banter with the audience in between songs... so charismatically; the way he'd toss that microphone stand in the air with blatant disregard for the welfare of said stand... Awesome. In 2005 I got to tour with John Farnham in 'Grease: The Arena Spectacular'. In fact, it was the reason I signed on...

Manager

Court, do you want to play one of the T-birds in a national tour of Grease and dance your arse off to thousands of people or contend on the new season of Dancing With The Stars and... dance your arse off to millions of people'?

Courtney

I don't really want to do either... I don't really like to dance... I'm kinda fat. Fat dudes don't like dancing very much... could I just skip that crap and go straight to recording an album and maybe capitalise on my success on Australian Idol while it lasts?

Manager

John Farnham has signed on to tour the country in the show... effectively you'll be touring the country with John Farnham, while earning a squid or two in the process... ?

Courtney

I love dancing.

On my end I'd be happy to say that John and I bonded over that tour... whether that's true for him or not, I can't say. I remember the first time we met was at the sitzprobe (where the band and the singers join for the first time) and he came up to me, shook my hand and said 'G'day Courtney, I was told you were on Australian Idol, I don't watch the show myself... I think ***** ******* is a *****, but I was told you did very well....' well I knew then and there that we were going to get along swimmingly.

Throughout the tour when he'd go out and do his big number in the middle of the show, I'd always leave my dressing room to watch the magic of him commanding the audience... I still shake my head to the skill.

When he'd finish he'd come walking backstage and always ask me 'Was it good tonight Courtney?' To which I'd be honest with him... either... 'It was amazing tonight John' or 'It wasn't as good as Brisbane'...

I won't give all of my great Farnham moments away in my blog... I'll keep some for campfire purposes... if you're hanging out with me and want to know a few... remind me. there's a couple of corkers.

This was my little gush about Farnham and how if he just found the right songs and gave us a little bit more of the magic we know he's capable of... he'd be right back on top of where he should be again.

I miss the magic.

Love Court.

Esperance.
Courtney Murphy Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:39

It's been 9 1/2 years since I played the civic centre in Esperance. Last time it was for the change of century news years celebrations. After an exceedingly long drive from Perth to Esperance (9 hours) we pulled into the big E on a particularly gusty winters night... It would have blown Berts toupé off. It seems they haven't changed a thing since we left. Kane (our sound guy) has a sister who lives down here and catered for a post road trip feed. Boy does that girl know how to put on a spread. Clay, Kieran and Jase flew down just before midday today and it didn't take them long to find the nearest pub with a surprisingly attractive skimpy. Man we love the country. We all downed a couple of pints of the magical golden juice and went to set up at the oddly familiar civic centre. I found a nice tall scaffold backstage that I thought would make an awesome set piece. So me and Bolg took to adorning it with as many lights as Kane had spare; and to top it off we added the new whizbang neon sign. I'm currently writing this back in my room from my iPhone getting ready to remind Esperance why they haven't invited us back for 9 1/2 years. I'd have to say this is the best part of the trip. We are just about to do what we do best... 5 great mates that happen to be in a band together and a severe lack of consideration for the lengthy haul back home tomorrow. Hey Esperance, bend over.

I remember a party...
Courtney Murphy Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:39

... I think I was 15 years old... and it was at a friend's house. Well because I was 15 and so was she... it was her parents house. I had such a crush on this girl. It was an amazing soul destroying unrequited crush. She was going out with a guy that I though was a noodle, but in hindsight, they went out for quite some time so he couldn't have been that bad... not your typical 'week long relationship' that existed in high school. It was one of those parties where your mum picks you up at the end, so you'd better be careful with how much you drink... the last thing you'd want to do is slur your words in the brief conversation in the car ride home. I don't feel like putting the name of the girl down in print here... I doubt that's fair. I just remember and hang onto that strange disgusting enticing feeling I got in my stomach when I was around her. I'm not saying I don't get that feeling when I'm with my beautiful wife, but it's never the same as when you're 15, you're a young dude and you're just discovering the power the female form has over you. I sometimes internalise and rediscover those memories to help in songwriting. Well if I wrote about all the stuff I'm into now... I think people would get bored with songs about food, Jane, an outdoor spa and a grumpy as shit cat. Sometimes you just have to go somewhere inside that still hurts just a little bit... I guess there's no reason behind this blog; I was just thinking about that night... a fairly uneventful party that sticks with me just because of my age and the way I felt about a girl. Silly really... She's married with a gorgeous little baby now, and we both turn 30 this year. Inspiration comes from the most odd places... like a party, half my life ago.

Come And Go...
Courtney Murphy Sunday, 13 September 2009 17:40

Alright, don't say I do nothin' for you... check out this new filmclip from Bleu. The track is called 'Come And Go'... and it's aWeSOMe, (as he would put it!) Be sure to click on the little HD button to watch it all gloriously high def. The bit I love is where the Bleu... I mean... Blue Sky Dancer at 34 seconds in strums the guitar... I mean these things seem to have their own agenda and 'life' in the clip. It's shot so gloriously, and the song is a little bit superb as well. Bleu's new album 'A Watched Pot' got released today, so go and buy it online from your usual American site. Australia sucks so you won't be able to find it here, but go to www.notlame.com to buy it. Too exciting kids, seriously.
